- Mar 252:00 PMI-SENSE Revisioning Utopia: The Regulation of Simulation in a Time of Generative AIThe Regulation of Simulation in a Time of Generative AIGenerative AI that can simulate human thoughts and emotions is poised to displace human influencers, entertainers, friends, even romantic partners, and transform parasocial and social relationships. The technology enables manipulation at scale, based on the data of millions. This affords those in control of advanced computation an outsized role in shaping future events, preferences, and values. Given well-documented human vulnerabilities and data harms, these GenAI developments in simulation must be tightly regulated. This talk explores legal authorities (e.g. consumer protection statutes, trademark law, and laws proscribing unfair and deceptive acts and practices) that can limit GenAI-driven simulations in order to preserve human value and values. Which laws can be updated to maintain a “reality-based community,” or a "right to reality”?Speaker:Frank Pasquale is Professor of Law at Cornell Tech and Cornell Law School, and an internationally recognized and prolific scholar whose work has addressed the regulation of technology in several contexts. His widely cited research has been featured in top law reviews, and he has advised governmental officials on cutting edge issues in law & technology regulation.Pasquale’s book, The Black Box Society: The Secret Algorithms That Control Money and Information (Harvard University Press, 2015), has been recognized internationally as a landmark study on information asymmetries. It is cited in fields ranging from law to computer science to sociology to literature. Pasquale’s latest book, New Laws of Robotics: Defending Human Expertise in the Age of AI (Harvard University Press, 2020) analyses the law and policy influencing the adoption of AI in varied professional fields.Join here: https://bit.ly/isensepasquale
