1. RECOGNIZE
Recognize signs of distress
- Talking about killing themselves
- Looking for ways to kill themselves
- Visible scars
- Substance use
- No sense of purpose
- Anxiety or agitation
- Feeling trapped
- No sense of hope
- Withdrawal from social activities
- Anger or revenge
- Reckless or risky activities
- Dramatic mood changes
- Giving away prized possessions/seeking long term care for pets
- Changes to sleep
- Sudden improvement
2. RESPOND
Respond to needs and concerns
Remember CLASP!
- Convey Care“We’ve been friends for a while now. How are you really doing?”
- Listen and communicate without judgement“It sounds like you’ve been feeling frustrated.”
- Ask directly about suicide“Are you thinking about suicide?”
- Stay focused and present“I’m listening. Please keep going.”
- Provide resources“Let’s call CAPS together.”

3. REFER
Refer them to resources
"It sounds like things are really tough right now. If you are feeling unsure about wanting to live, I would like to share information about the counseling center we have access to on campus. CAPS provides free and confidential support to students. Their number is 561-297-2277 and it works 24/7 in case students need crisis support after-hours. We can call them together, or we can walk to the CAPS office.”
Refer the person and bridge them to resources.
