- 4:00 PM1hFrontiers in Science: with Monica K. HurdalJoin Professor and Associate Chair of Mathematics, Florida State University, Monica K. Hurdal, Ph.D., for "Mapping the Brain in Health, Aging, and Disease."The human brain is highly folded, and the folding patterns of an individual are unique, like a fingerprint. The mechanisms that contribute to cortical folding pattern formation during development are not fully understood. Furthermore, our brain folds widen and deepen as we age, and some affective disorders have been correlated with changes in folding patterns. Diseases with folding pattern abnormalities include polymicrogyria and lissencephaly. The complexity of brain folding patterns makes it extremely challenging to study brain diseases since there is such variability in the folding patterns across healthy individuals. In this presentation, I will discuss how my research group is contributing to our understanding of brain folding pattern formation via mathematical modeling and how 170-year-old mathematics is being used in new ways to map the brain in health, aging, and disease.About Frontiers in ScienceWelcome to the 2023 season of our public lecture series, Frontiers in Science, hosted by the Florida Atlantic University Charles E. Schmidt College of Science. This season will be back in-person, with live talks and question and answer sessions. We invite you to explore the sciences with us. - 7:00 PM1hPolaroid Stories by Naomi IizukaA visceral blend of classical mythology and real-life stories told by street kids, Polaroid Stories journeys into a dangerous world where myth-making fulfills a fierce need for transcendence, where storytelling has the power to transform a reality in which characters’ lives are continually threatened, devalued and effaced. Inspired in part by Ovid’s Metamorphoses, these modern-day mortals are engulfed by needs that burn and consume. Their language mixes poetry and profanity, imbuing the play with lyricism and great theatrical force.Purchase tickets at fauevents.com or call 561-297-6124
