- 5:30 PM2hCarl Zimmer: Is Artificial Intelligence Going To Figure Out Life Itself?Join award-winning science journalist Carl Zimmer for a discussion on AI at Florida Atlantic University. Carl Zimmer is a columnist for The New York Times and an expert on topics ranging from evolution to pandemics to brain-mapping. He is the author of fifteen widely praised books and is a regular contributor to magazines including National Geographic and The Atlantic.About the TalkArtificial intelligence is increasingly becoming a part of our everyday lives, from planning vacations to editing photos. But biologists are using the same underlying software to explore some of the deepest mysteries of life. These foundation models, as they're called, can learn by themselves how proteins fold into their intricately complex structures. They can make up new proteins from scratch. Even more ambitiously, foundation models are making sense of how thousands of genes work together inside our cells to keep us alive. In a few weeks, computers can analyze data from millions of cells and teach themselves some of the most fundamental principles of biology. What will they discover next? And will they put biologists out of a job? In this talk, Carl Zimmer draws on his reporting for the New York Times and in books like Life Itself to take his audience on a mind-bending trip into the not-so-distant future, when computers can discover how to make new kinds of cells, and maybe new kinds of life.Schedule of Events5:30-6:30: Lecture6:30-7:30: Reception, with books for sale in lobbyThe Nat and Dorothy Hyman Science Lecture Series in the Florida Atlantic Charles E. - 7:30 PM2hBoggy TournamentIt's not quite ping pong, golf, or dodgeball, it's BOGGY! We will be hosting a Boggy Tournament, come test your skills! What is Boggy? Boggy is played around a table tennis set up where players go head to head in order to score points on each other. Just like golf, points are bad. If you get 7 points then you're out! The first step is to establish the order of the rotation. Every player will have a person to receive a serve from and to serve to. The first player serves to the second and initiates the game, from there an official serve will only be necessary if a point is scored. The game continues until there is one player left. Serving Serving rules are the same as table tennis from the serving side, the ball must bounce once on the other side of the net in order for the serve to be legal. There are no point penalties for illegal serves, the ball is re-served until a serve is legal. The player receiving the serve has to let the ball bounce on the ground before making a return. The object of the game is to get the ball back on the table. Once the ball makes contact with the table, the next player in the rotation is initiated and has to return the ball to the table after it bounces to the ground. Points If a player fails to return the ball to the table they receive a point and have to serve to the next player in the rotation. Receiving seven points takes you out of the rotation. The last player standing wins the game. Rules The ball must be returned with a paddle unless the game is being played without them. No player may touch a ball in play besides the receiving player. No player may touch another player to prevent them from returning the ball. Shenanigans There are certain moves that are legal that can increase your likelihood of winning the game. For example, while you may not touch a ball in play, if it happens to be rolling on the table you may blow it away from the receiver as this is not considered touching or illegal interference. You may catch a ball that has been returned if the ball is not going to make it to the table. This results in a point being immediately subtracted to your total and the player returning the ball serves to the next player in the rotation. You may use your return to bounce the ball off of another player instead of returning the ball to the table. This results in a point being scored on the hit player and no penalty on the player returning. The returning player serves to the next player in the rotation. If the player the returning player intended to make contact with dodges the ball and the ball does not make contact with the table then the returning player receives a point and has to serve to the next player in the rotation.Hosted by: Baptist Collegiate MinistriesAdditional Information can be found at: https://fau.campuslabs.com/engage/event/10738753
