Owl Family Weekend 2024 consists of a themed three-day weekend starting Friday, September 27. Each day will include theming around the Division of Student Affairs priorities: Health & Wellness, Sense of Belonging, and Career Readiness.Friday, September 27: Wine and Cheese event - 4 p.m., Student Support Services building, Boca Raton Campus. The event will feature appetizers, DJ, giveaways, and bars on both floors. Mingle with University officials and learn about vendors/discounts in the local area. Additional registration is required for the Wine & Design event that evening. Space is limited.Saturday, September 28: GAMEDAY! Join the Owls as they get ready to take on Wagner during the air-conditioned tailgate at the Campus Recreation & Fitness Center. The catered tailgate will include VIP guests, face paint, a Health & Wellness exhibit, balloon artists, DJs, and more! Computer science has traditionally focused on functionality, aiming to provide features to accomplish tasks. This approach has led to digital platforms that surpass past generations' dreams in capability. Yet, this success has drawbacks: diminished control over personal information, increased loneliness and division, and careers increasingly governed by algorithms.I propose shifting from functionality-based to experience-based computing. Instead of solely focusing on the digital platforms themselves, we should emphasize the experiences they create. By incorporating insights from psychology and game design into our understanding of user interactions and emotions, we can design platforms that genuinely enhance people's lives. This perspective sheds new light on long-standing issues in computer science, such as accessibility, social computing, and artificial intelligence.Brian A. Smith is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Columbia University and directs the Computer-Enabled Abilities Laboratory (CEAL). His research focuses on reimagining digital platform design to better address human needs and enhance well-being. He takes a holistic approach, integrating insights from engineering, social sciences, design, and games. His work spans accessibility, social computing, augmented reality, and smart city infrastructure. Smith is a National Academy of Sciences Kavli Fellow and has received the NSF CAREER Award, Columbia Engineering’s Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award, and the Janette and Armen Avanessians Diversity Award.Can't make it in person? Lynn College of Nursing will host its Annual Convocation, welcoming students and celebrating the start of a new academic year, on Friday, September 27, at 3:30 p.m.Held in the College of Nursing's auditorium on the Boca Raton campus, the Convocation will feature prominent speakers, including Dean Emeritus Dr. Anne Boykin, who will deliver the keynote address, alumna Dr. Jinga Oglesby-Brihm, CEO of Empower Healthcare, Inc. and Senior Scholar Caring Science PhD student Héctor Rosso.
