A Friday Florida Atlantic University announcement warned the community about a small plane crash that killed three people near Military Trail in Boca Raton, located about 11 minutes away from the campus.
According to an April 11 news release from the Boca Raton Police Department, the Cessna 310 plane was reported having trouble after taking off from the Boca Raton Airport. Moments later after circling in that air, the aircraft crashed in flames along Military Trail, near the Glades Road overpass.
The news release stated that a driver on the road was affected causing the car to crash into a tree, no life-threatening injuries to the driver were reported. However, the three passengers of the flight did not survive.
The university email was sent out at 12:19 p.m., advising students and staff to avoid the area of the crash, as Military Trail was closed off between NW 19th Street and Butts Road. The I-95 overpass at Glades Road was also closed in east and westbound directions, at the time of the announcement.
