The Regulation of Simulation in a Time of Generative AIGenerative AI that can simulate human thoughts and emotions is poised to displace human influencers, entertainers, friends, even romantic partners, and transform parasocial and social relationships. The technology enables manipulation at scale, based on the data of millions. This affords those in control of advanced computation an outsized role in shaping future events, preferences, and values. Given well-documented human vulnerabilities and data harms, these GenAI developments in simulation must be tightly regulated. This talk explores legal authorities (e.g. consumer protection statutes, trademark law, and laws proscribing unfair and deceptive acts and practices) that can limit GenAI-driven simulations in order to preserve human value and values.
